In the Spirit brings together an extraordinary array of acclaimed musicians to celebrate the great spiritual and cultural traditions of Tibet, China, the Indian subcontinent, Africa, the Middle East, and the West.  The program features the NY premiere of the Songs of Milarepa, composed by Philip Glass and set to poems by Tibet’s great saint and poet Milarepa (1052-1135) and performed by baritone Gregory Purnhagen and pianist Nelson Padgett; the venerable Pomerium vocal ensemble performing sacred music of the Renaissance; Riyaaz Qawwali performing the ecstatic improvisational Sufi vocal tradition from the Indian subcontinent; Gambian kora (harp-lute) player Foday Musa Suso playing traditional music of the Mandingo people of West Africa; virtuoso ney (Turkish flute) player Omar Faruk Tekbilek  in a rare performance of Sufi music of the Middle East; and celebrated pipa (Chinese lute) player Wu Man playing traditional music and original music by Philip Glass with the cutting-edge Scorchio Quartet.  Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Garrison Institute, which brings the wisdom of deep reflection to help solve the pressing social and environmental challenges of our time.
